The blunt truth: mobile fitters don't work on the M25

This surprises drivers every day. Independent mobile tyre fitters — including the largest national operators — are not licensed or insured to work on live motorway carriageways in the UK. That's a legal and practical rule, not a lazy one. The Highways Act, National Highways contractor licensing, and the fitter's own insurance all prohibit working next to live motorway traffic without a formal lane closure. So when you call a mobile fitter from the M25 hard shoulder, the answer is always the same: they can't come to the carriageway. 2. If you have breakdown cover (AA, RAC, Green Flag), call them in parallel. Most breakdown providers won't fit tyres roadside on the motorway either — but they'll tow you off, usually to a services or a safe layby.

If your breakdown is on the sliproad approaching or leaving an M25 junction, and you can safely coast to the side street beyond the roundabout, most mobile fitters will attend directly. The moment you're off the National Highways carriageway, the licensing constraint disappears. Judgement call — never risk driving on a destroyed tyre to get there.
